#TBT : A Year of Piercing Trends in Review
Throwback Thursday to a Year of Super Cute Piercings of 2016
2016 has truly been a year of the piercing comeback. We saw celebrities and civilians alike sporting body piercings all year long in total, utter, wearable style this year. The changes we saw in the piercing trends were huge this past year, going from a grunge/punk rock to delicate and refined and versatile enough for all ages, styles and genders.
In this article, we’ll review a year of the top trends in body piercings and body jewelry that still has us giddy with inspiration. Mainstream or not, we love the idea of body piercings becoming a norm, just like tattoos have become over the years.
In the past years, having body piercings required one to pay a certain level of homage to the music and alternative lifestyle. That has changed significantly in the last year or so as the non traditionally expected stylistas began to incorporate piercings into their accessories, wardrobes and even their makeup/cosmetic routines.
Why and how did this happen? For starters, vlogging and Instagram accounts of fashion bloggers went viral. Celebrities began reaching for piercings as a part of their persona. Luxury jewelry designers started to take notice and recreate body jewelry to support the need. Fans and civilians quickly took notice and gave it their own twist to the trends. We love all of it, not just because of our involvement in body jewelry but because we really get to see the industry evolve past what we ever expected. For that, we are in deep gratitude to the bold and pierced.
Nose Piercings Take The Stage
Nose piercings have been around for centuries but this last year took it to a whole another level. The typical nostril piercing experienced a whole new look with the tiny, detailed and trendy piercing jewelry that evolved alongside the piercing. The nose (nostril) piercings have always been a pretty, low risk piercing enjoyed by the brave and this year, we saw it become a complimentary piercing to another nose piercing, the septum.
The septum piercing gained mad traction when the models on runways and celebs like Rihanna started wearing beautifully detailed septum clickers and hangers. For the first half of the year, we really a saw spike in demand for elaborate septum jewelry. As the year progressed, septum jewelry took a slight detour, reverting back to simple, clean and classic jewelry like the seamless infinity rings in rose or yellow gold, re-introducing itself as the simple piercing that could be worn with just about any style or makeup look.
We’re thankful to see the nose and septum piercing take the spotlight by so many. “Bull ring piercing” no more.

Lip Piercing 2.0
Lip piercings also got a major, major makeover this year. 2016 brought about lip piercings that in full revival mode. We’ve seen the monroe piercing for quite a few years as the go-to feminine, wearable piercing, much like the labret, but this last year we saw variations of piercing placement on and round the lips that have truly resuscitated our passion for lip piercings.
We saw the medusa or philtrum piercing pop up on just about every who’s who, from famous beauty and lifestyle bloggers to Instagram mega stars. This piercing sits just above the cupid’s bow, complementing the full lip look that virtually every woman craves. Then the smiley piercing arrived, bringing attention to the easily overlook upper frenum under the upper lip and gums, further skyrocketing lip piercing popularity to new heights.
“Bite” piercings of all kinds began to emerge in 2016 as well, such as the viper, the snake, the dolphin, the spider, the angel, the joker, the canine and of course, the dahlia bites. These paired piercings paved way for all kinds of body jewelry inspiration, ranging from classic jeweled labrets in monotone to mix and match color and texture styles. The lips have always been a part of the face that draws mystery and in 2016, the mystery was out, new updated piercings were in.
The Return of Ear Piercings Times Two
Ear piercings took a turn for the best this year bringing about an amazing onslaught of dainty and adorable ear jewelry. For most of us, the very first piercing we will ever encounter is usually before we have even learned to speak. Proud mothers and fathers everywhere take their tiny infant to their local mall to get their ears pierced, all in the hopes that they are too young to remember the pain of a piercing gun. And for most, the memory does not exist.
Then at some point in middle school or high school, we go for that second or third lobe piercing or even a cartilage piercing. These non secondary and tertiary piercing cravings are just enough to add some serious flair to one’s life without the risk or courage needed for other piercings. These additional ear piercings have slowly but surely come into fruition this past year, anticipated only to continue on a gradual and steady uphill curve.
The tragus, daith, rook, helix, conch and industrial piercings have opened up a whole new way to decorate the ears. Unlike traditional earring with a bar and stud, these piercings allow for options in which type of body jewelry to use, such as tiny septum clickers, ear barbells, curved barbells, ear chains, industrial barbells, and captive bead rings. The combinations of how these can be worn adds to the custom experience of carrying a bit of art with you (on your ears) just about everywhere you go.
Jewelry makers have taken due notice; this season is all about teeny tiny ear jewelry for every type of personality and style from letters of the alphabet, numbers, animal lovers, zodiac symbols and so many other niche area symbols that can be proudly worn. And these dainty piercings are not just for the teeny boppers, the delicate and ultra glam look is a sure hitter with ladies of all age groups.
